WEARABLE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM WEALTHY OBJECTIVES

2. Definition of WEALTHY

The main objective of WEALTHY is to set up a comfortable health monitoring system. This will be based on a "wearable" interface, implemented by integrating smart sensors (in fiber and yarn form), advanced signal processing techniques and modern telecommunication systems on a textile platform and by developing a monitoring system for data management with local intelligence in the form of a decision support unit.

2.1 Components of WEALTHY

The basic building blocks of such a system include:
  • "Smart" sensors, which provide direct sensing capabilities to textile materials.
  • A cost-effective, non-invasive and wearable system based on wearable and wireless-instrumented garments, which are able to detect user-specific physiological signals.
  • An intelligent system for data representation and alert functions, which is able to create intelligent patient feedback and deliver appropriate information to a target professional.
  • Electronic devices for transmitting the signals by means of GPRS using the standard GSM network, thus allowing usage of the sensing garment "anywhere" - at home, at work, at the hospital/rehabilitation centre as well as away from a local base station.
  • Advanced telecommunication protocols and services (e.g. Bluetooth for short range).
  • Effective and user-friendly data format.

2.1.1 Key Features of WEALTHY

The WEALTHY system will thus:
  • Assist the patient during rehabilitation.
  • Assist professional worker during risk activities.
  • Ensure intelligent monitoring of the users during, for instance, everyday tasks and physical exercise. Such a feedback can include alerts and warnings or conversely, to provide reassurance over the situation.
  • Trigger automatic transmission of physiological or clinical sensitive parameters.
  • Alert emergency services if the situation turns critical (absence of patient response, alarming vital signs, etc.).
  • Allow the interpretation and extrapolation of index related to physiological conditions by considering all simultaneous data.
  • Guarantee a friendly interface for professionals.
  • Ensure a high degree of freedom and let the user perform his/her normal activities
